Boat Racing Festival – Vietnam

This marks my fourth visit to Vietnam. These visits are far from random; they are deliberate choices. Every time I come to Vietnam, I find myself spiritually rejuvenated and deeply fulfilled. This country captivates not only with its unique natural beauty and breathtaking beaches but also with its rich historical and cultural heritage. The warmth and hospitality of the Vietnamese people are among the top reasons why I hold this country so dear.

This time, upon arriving in Hanoi, a Vietnamese friend invited me to the Boat Racing Festival held in Dam Village, about 20 kilometers away from Hanoi. This traditional festival is a unique event in Vietnam, celebrated only once every five years. Not wanting to miss such an experience, I adjusted my schedule to attend. Although the festival spans several days, the day that suited me best was Monday, April 7th, which coincided with Hung Kings Commemoration Day, a public holiday in Vietnam.

Journey to Dam Village and the Start of the Festival
On Monday morning, I rented a motorbike in Hanoi and headed to Dam Village. I met my friend and their family at 1:00 PM. After a brief family visit, we joined the enthusiastic crowd gathered along the Pheo River to witness the race. The atmosphere was vibrant and filled with the excitement of the festival.

The Boat Races and Festive Excitement
Three teams participated in the races, represented by the colors Red, Yellow, and Blue. Each team competed with a group of boats, and some teams had multiple boats in the race. At the front of each boat, a drummer kept the paddlers in rhythm, while a steersperson at the back navigated the boat. Thrilling moments unfolded during the race, such as collisions and capsized boats, with athletes falling into the river, adding to the excitement for both participants and spectators. Along the riverbanks, supporters cheered passionately for their teams, creating an electric atmosphere.

My friend, their family, and I rooted for the Red team. Coincidentally, I happened to be wearing a red shirt that day, perfectly matching our chosen team. At times, we moved closer to the Red team’s paddlers to cheer them on with loud chants and applause, adding a personal touch to the experience.

Flower Stalls and the Festival's Vibrant Spirit
Dam Village is also renowned for its flower cultivation. As part of the festival, we had the opportunity to visit stalls showcasing beautiful flowers grown in the village. These vibrant displays blended seamlessly with the energy of the boat racing festival, adding a touch of elegance to the lively atmosphere.

The Festival's Conclusion and Recommendations
By late afternoon, the races came to an end. We left the Pheo River behind, feeling pleasantly tired but immensely satisfied. This unique event offers an incredible opportunity to experience Vietnam’s cultural richness. If you are planning to visit Vietnam, I strongly recommend timing your trip to coincide with this festival. Events like these are a perfect way to immerse yourself in the cultural depth of the country and spend an unforgettable day.
